“The Pelican is an ancient symbol of unconditional service - of love, motherhood and the ultimate self sacrifice. It appears in an old fable where, in times of hardship and famine, the mother pelican bird pierces her own side and nourishes her chicks with her blood.”

Created in 2020 during the pandemic as a tribute to mothers everywhere.

“The pelican knows how to adapt to current conditions to survive and protect. I thought this was very akin to the mothers who are adapting to giving birth in these challenging times as well as the care workers and frontline staff who are selflessly working to keep us all safe. The ‘Pelican Mother’ from my previous painting now with her newborn chicks - a tribute to the mothers who have had to weather these unusual times in isolation, perhaps without loved ones but who have emerged the other side with their new life.’
